Additional Healthy Foods for your Canary

Besides a good quality seed canaries need healthy foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. A little fresh spinach, kale, broccoli, chopped carrots, apple, or pear offered every other day (every day if your birds are breeding) will help to keep your little feathered friend healthy. Broccoli from your garden which is allowed to flower is relished by canaries as is dandelion. Make sure they have not been sprayed with pesticides.

Soak seed or sprouting seed is a favorite of canaries and provides more carbohydrates than their dry seed. A little can be fed daily or a few times a week. Follow directions carefully on preparation to avoid mold and bacteria growth. Do not attempt to sprout your dry seed mix. Most of these dry seed mixes are coated with vitamins and soaking them will easily grow mold and bacteria.

Clean water must be available to your canary at all times! Tube water dispensers are best since they are easy to keep clean and are not easily fouled by droppings.
