Selecting a Bird Cage for Your Canary- where to find great cages

Your canaries’ home is an important consideration. How much space do they need? Well, your canary needs enough space to fly a bit. This exercise is critical to good health and vitality. A minimum bird cage size should be at least 18” wide x 18” long, but if you have the room larger is always better. And, you have heard correctly, NO ROUND CAGES for canaries.

Bar spacing is another important consideration. For small birds like canaries, finches and parakeets ½ inch or 5/8 bar spacing is ideal.

Here is where it gets tricky. Should there be a grate on the bottom of the cage or no grate? Some bird people say there shouldn’t be a grate since canaries like to forage. Others believe there should be. I personally believe there should be. Grates keep your canary from consuming food that may be contaminated by droppings and keeps your birds feet cleaner. This choice is yours.

Cage styles vary. Most have cups and perches included. Perches should be placed in your cage offering the most flying room side to side. Wood perches of varying thickness are best. Different size perches help to exercise your birds’ feet.

You may want to consider getting different cups than what may be provided with your cage. Large open cups set low in the cage will not be of much use. These will easily get contaminated by droppings. Look for smaller cups or cups with covers that can be hung higher up in your cage. Some cages come with cups that hang on the outside of the cage.
