Bird cage accessories are numerous and varied. Some are pretty much required and others, you may decide, will make a great addition to your little friends’ environment.
Bathing is essential for your canary. A bath should be offered a few times a week preferably in the morning. Every day if you have the time. Many sites recommend that your birds’ bath water should be of room temperature. From experience I can tell you that canaries truly enjoy a cold water bath. They won't fall ill from a cold bath but be certain there is plenty of time for you bird to dry completely before bed time. The rule is no baths past noon.
There are two types of bath options. Either one that hangs onto the cage door or a small bath you can place into your cage. Some canaries are shy to enter the door baths but if you keep offering it they should come around. With either, be prepared to change the paper on the bottom of the cage or do your thorough weekly cleaning as some birds enjoy their bath so much your whole cage will get a bath.
Cage covers are usually necessary so your little friends’ cage is dark and they can get proper rest. Canaries wake up when it gets light out and need to go to sleep when it gets dark. Following this rule will help keep your canary on a healthy schedule.
Cuttlebone for seed fed birds is needed to provide a good source of calcium. Calcium for female birds is essential for egg formation. In molting birds, extra calcium is also necessary for all the new feathers your bird is quickly replacing.
A good mineral source is also important to good health. Windy City Parrot offers mineral grit that is two fold. You get both the grit which is said to aid in digestion and the minerals your bird needs.
Bird Toys and Toy Safety
Canaries aren’t known for being really into playing with toys. But, I find that my birds seem to really enjoy their toys! I provide them with a variety of string based toys. They love to pull at string. Some of the bird toys are beaded or leather. They play with them all and I believe that with multiple birds it helps to reduce picking on each other.
I provide a material based swing and a small boing in my flight cages. Canaries love swings. It’s very natural for there to be movement as they are perched just as in branches.
Caution must be taken, with any toys, to trim loose strings so your bird does not get caught up in them. Take caution in your selection to not pick instant hazards.
Mirrors are not recommended. Since males are territorial seeing a bird in a mirror will possibly be upsetting and harassing.
Visit my merchants for a great selection of pet supplies and toys to suit all of your needs. Don’t forget to get extra feed dishes and cups so you can replace and wash these easily.
